When an ankle injury happens

Ankle injuries can run the gamut from being pretty minor (the type where you are up and getting around your feet after just a day or two) or the sort where you may be incapacitated and off your feet for weeks if not even months! Regardless of the type of ankle injury that you have it is a pain and an inconvenience, both mentally and physically. Here are some basic tips that can help you to get back on your feet after an ankle injury- as soon as possible!

In the initial days after you have hurt your ankle, you will have the most acute pain. However, this will begin to decline after the first two or three days. In fact, even in cases where swelling is not evident you will often find some relief after a day or two. When you do not see any swelling, that may just mean that there is some deep bruising (although this does not necessarily mean that this is a very serious type of injury) that has not shown up to the surface as yet.

A few important things to remember for basic care after an ankle injury include the following. Get plenty of rest and try to to walk as little as you possibly can. While you do not have to just lay around and sleep all the time, the idea is to stay off that ankle as often as you can. Keep applying ice on a regular basis. Ice should be in the form of ice packs, never being put directly onto the skin's surface.

Elevation is another basic idea that can make a big difference when helping an ankle injury. Keep ankle up at least several inches, elevated above the rest of the body while resting. Compression can also make a big difference in helping an ankle injury heal. Bandages ought to be applied firmly but should never be painful. Bandages should also be removed before bedtime. One way to try to eliminate bruising is to try a hot/cold alternation method. After using the ice packs, then alternate with very warm(almost boiling level)water which you pour gently over the ankle, or use during a bath.
